The route

The gateway to the sky

La Porta del Cel circles the high country of the Pallars Sobirà, deep in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park — the largest protected area in Catalonia — and crosses the border into the French Ariège. Starting from the slate-roofed village of Tavascan, the route links four mountain refuges across five days, climbing to the Pica d'Estats at 3,143 metres, the highest peak in Catalonia, and passing Certascan, the largest natural lake in the Pyrenees. Blue glacial lakes, granite ridgelines, and high passes where snow can hold into early summer.

It's usually walked in five stages, though the short first day can fold into the second for a faster four; a lower variant drops through the Boavi valley for those who want to shorten the final stage. The peaks don't change — how you take them on is yours to decide.

What you’ll see

The summit of Catalonia — Pica d'Estats

The summit of Catalonia — Pica d'Estats

On the high stage the trail crosses a small glacier and climbs to the Pica d'Estats at 3,143 metres, the highest peak in Catalonia, on the Spanish-French border. The descent into the Vallferrera valley follows rivers and waterfalls down toward the refuge.

Nights in high-altitude refuges

Nights in high-altitude refuges

The route links four guarded mountain refuges — Certascan, Pinet, Vallferrera — set beside glacial lakes and beneath historic summits. Half-board in the dorms, communal dinners, and the route-card stamped at each stage in the old Pyrenean tradition.

Twenty lakes between the peaks

Twenty lakes between the peaks

Certascan, the largest natural lake in the Pyrenees, the Estanys Blaus, the Baborte lakes beneath Roca Cigalera — the trek threads dozens of high-altitude lakes where the water is still and the silence is complete.
