The route

Where the volcanoes meet the sea

The Pirinexus loops 340 kilometres out of Girona — first northwest through the volcanic Garrotxa to Olot, then up over the Pyrenean passes to the Col d'Ares and across the French border into the Vallespir, before dropping to the Costa Brava and following traffic-free greenways back to the city. Beech forest and dormant volcanoes, the Greek and Roman ruins at Empúries, the medieval streets of Girona itself, and long stretches of old railway track between them. Most of it rides on greenway and quiet secondary road; the border climb and the technical descent back into Spain are where it earns its name.

There's no single right way to ride it. Some take it on in two hard days of 170 kilometres each; most spread it across four, or six unhurried ones, sleeping in the villages along the route and stopping for long lunches. The loop is the same — how fast you close it is yours to decide.

What you’ll see

Out of Girona into the volcanoes

Out of Girona into the volcanoes

The route leaves Girona on the Carrilet greenway, an old railway line that climbs gently through the Ter and Brugent valleys into the Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa around Olot — beech forest, dormant cones, and volcanic rock alongside the track.

Over the border at the Col d'Ares

Over the border at the Col d'Ares

From Olot the climbing begins: the Coubet and Santigosa passes lift you to Sant Joan de les Abadesses and on through Camprodon to the Col d'Ares at 1,510 metres, the route's high point and the border crossing into the French Vallespir. The descent back into Spain turns technical — a stretch of real gravel where the road simply ends.

Down to the Costa Brava and back

Down to the Costa Brava and back

The return leg drops to the coast past the Greek and Roman ruins at Empúries and the coves of the Empordà shoreline, then follows the old Tren Petit and Carrilet II greenways back to Girona, closing the loop where it began.
